Search marketing, historically, had meant Search Engine Marketing (SEM). SEM was divided into the two distinct disciplines of Search Engine Optimization (SEO - to increase site traffic by achieving favorable ranking in search engines) and Pay-Per-Click search advertising (PPC - buying listings for certain keywords within search engines, Google's AdWords program being the current leader). Today, SEO & PPC are still important pieces of the search marketing puzzle, but the discipline is expanding.
Advancements by search engines, new mobile capabilities, the explosion of multimedia... these are just a few drops in the steady stream of game changers in search marketing. Search can no longer be about a couple of tactics with acronyms. To adapt, search marketing must become a philosophy: be present with the right message when and where your products or services are sought.
